This year’s Walk on Words competition took place during National Poetry Month as part of the City’s Public Art program. Entrants were required to submit original poems that were no more than eight lines long, including the title, and with a maximum of 25 characters per line, including spaces. The theme for this year’s contest was Sister Cities.
The “Sister Cities” theme celebrates the relationship of the Association of Sister Cities in Palmdale with Poncitlán since 1974. Palmdale’s Sister City, Poncitlán, in Jalisco, Mexico, has a proud heritage and is known for its mariachi music, tequila production from the blue agave plant, and beautiful Lake Chapala.
The Sister City Program was initiated by President Eisenhower in 1956 to build one-on-one community relations with cities in other countries so that people could cross national boundaries, get to know each other personally, and form mutual respect and understanding of different cultures.
