City Extends Cooling Center Hours Through Sunday

Excessive Heat Warning in Effect

Cooling Centers Hours Extended at Palmdale City Library This Weekend

PALMDALE - The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from Friday, July 14 through Monday, July 17. The City of Palmdale is extending cooling center hours at the Palmdale City Library this weekend only.

The Palmdale City Library, located at 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., is a designated cooling center open to people of all ages. The extended hours are 5 to 8 pm on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15; and 10 am to 1 pm on Sunday, July 16. Library services will not be available during extended hours. The Library is also available as a cooling center during its normal hours, Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm. The Library’s phone number is 661/267-5600.

Seniors 55 and older may also use Legacy Commons for Active Seniors, 930 E. Avenue Q-9, as a cooling center during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. Legacy Commons’ phone number is 661/267-5904.

Victory Outreach, located at 37419 25th St. East, is a designated cooling center open to all ages from Wednesday, July 12 through Saturday, July 15 from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday, July 16 from 9 am to 9 pm. Victory Outreach’s phone number is 661/274-4909. Rides to this cooling center are available; please call 661/701-2145 to make arrangements.

Extreme heat can significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Residents should monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on weather conditions.

Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

For additional information visit www.cityofpalmdaleca.gov/ExtremeHeat or ready.lacounty.gov/heat/ or call 2-1-1 to locate your nearest LA County designated cooling center.

Los Angeles County residents and business owners, including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs, may also call 2-1-1 for emergency preparedness information and other referral services. The toll-free 2-1-1 number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 211 LA County services can also be accessed by visiting www.211la.org.
