Walk On Words Sidewalk Poetry to be Unveiled

Winning Poem Stamped in Concrete in Poncitlán Square

Media Alert

WHAT: The City of Palmdale’s Walk on Words poetry contest winner will be announced as their poem, stamped in concrete at Poncitlán Square, will be unveiled in a special ceremony.

WHEN: Tuesday, September 19 at 4:30 pm

WHERE: Poncitlán Square, 38315 9th St E

WHO: Mayor Laura Bettencourt, City Councilmembers, and special guests from Poncitlán, in Jalisco, Mexico.

DETAILS: This year’s Walk on Words competition took place in April during National Poetry Month as part of the City’s Public Art program. Entrants were required to submit original poems that were no more than eight lines long, including the title, and with a maximum of 25 characters per line, including spaces. The theme for this year’s contest was Sister Cities, a theme selected to celebrate the relationship of the Association of Sister Cities in Palmdale with Poncitlán since 1974. Palmdale’s Sister City, Poncitlán, in Jalisco, Mexico, has a proud heritage and is known for its mariachi music, tequila production from the blue agave plant, and beautiful Lake Chapala.

The Sister City Program was initiated by President Eisenhower in 1956 to build one-on-one community relations with cities in other countries so that people could cross national boundaries, build personal relationships, and form mutual respect and understanding of different cultures.
